The Changing Landscape of Consumer Lending Across the United States

Consumer Lending

The consumer lending market in the United States is evolving as borrowing needs and financial services change. Personal loans and buy now, pay later services give consumers different ways to pay for expenses, while digital platforms simplify parts of the borrowing process. Lenders are also using different types of financial information to assess loan applications.

These developments are shaping how Americans access credit in 2026. Although more options are available, loan costs, repayment schedules, and eligibility rules still differ across products and lenders. Understanding the latest trends can help consumers evaluate their choices and avoid borrowing more than they can repay.

Personal Loan Growth Reflects Changing Borrowing Needs

Personal loans give Americans a way to cover planned expenses and repay the amount over time. According to TransUnion, outstanding unsecured personal loan balances reached a record $281 billion in Q2 2026, up 9.6% from the previous year, while the number of borrowers increased from 24.8 million to 26.9 million. Borrowers use these loans for expenses such as home improvements and other major purchases. The fixed repayment schedule helps borrowers plan their payments, although interest and fees add to the total cost.

Alongside this growth in personal borrowing, financial technology has changed how consumers apply for loans. Many lenders now allow applicants to explore borrowing options and submit applications without visiting a physical branch. CreditNinja, for example, provides online personal loan applications, allowing consumers to complete the process digitally. Approval and funding times depend on the provider and the applicant’s circumstances, so borrowers should review the interest rate, fees, repayment schedule, and total cost before accepting an offer.

Alternative Financial Data Expands Access Beyond Credit Scores

Credit scores help lenders assess loan applications, but they don’t show every part of a person’s financial situation. For example, someone with a steady income and a history of paying rent on time can still have a limited credit history if they have never used a credit card or taken out a loan. This lack of borrowing history can make it harder for lenders to assess their creditworthiness and approve a loan.

Some lenders use additional financial information to assess applicants, including income deposits, bank transactions, and cash flow, with the applicant’s permission. Depending on the lender, rent and utility payment records can also help show a person’s payment habits. These details provide a broader view of an applicant’s finances, although each lender sets its own approval requirements.

Buy Now Pay Later Offers Broader Financing Options

Another significant development involves buy now, pay later services, commonly known as BNPL. These services initially gained popularity through payment plans that split purchases into four installments. Consumers buy products immediately and pay over several weeks instead of paying the full amount at checkout. BNPL options now apply to a range of purchases, including electronics, furniture, and other household goods.

BNPL products now offer more repayment options. According to a June 2026 Federal Reserve report, major BNPL providers issued nearly $160 billion in consumer credit in 2025, with traditional four-payment plans accounting for about half. Consumers should review payment schedules, fees, and penalties for missed payments, especially when managing several purchases.

Digital Lending Platforms Simplify Loan Management

Digital lending platforms are making it easier for Americans to manage their loans. Many now offer online accounts where borrowers can check balances, view payment schedules, and receive reminders about upcoming payments. Some platforms also offer tools to compare loan options and estimate monthly payments. These features give borrowers more control over their finances without needing to visit a bank.

Not all digital platforms provide accurate, up-to-date information. Some comparison websites may show outdated loan details or offers that don’t match a borrower’s financial situation. For this reason, consumers should verify information directly with reputable lenders or financial institutions before deciding. This can help them move from online comparisons to more reliable guidance based on their income, existing debt, and financial goals.

Subprime Borrowers Receive Smaller Loans Amid Tighter Reviews

More consumers with lower credit scores are obtaining personal loans, although lenders are limiting the amounts extended to some higher-risk borrowers. Income, existing debt, and credit history remain important in determining whether applicants qualify and how much they can borrow. This helps explain why growth in subprime lending does not necessarily mean larger loans or easier approval requirements.

TransUnion reported that subprime personal loan borrowers increased by 18.4% in Q2 2026, while the average size of new loans dropped by 6.8%. Smaller loan amounts can still carry substantial borrowing costs, particularly when interest rates are high. Before applying, borrowers should compare loan offers and fees, and make sure they can afford the payments.

Understanding Change Across America’s Consumer Lending Market

Consumer lending in the United States continues to evolve as lenders introduce new loan options and improve digital services. Personal loans, buy now, pay later services, and online platforms give consumers more ways to manage expenses and access credit. However, these options vary in cost, repayment terms, and eligibility requirements.

As borrowing options expand, consumers need to understand what each loan offers and how repayment fits their budgets. Comparing lenders, checking fees, and reviewing payment schedules can help borrowers avoid taking on more debt than they can afford. Making informed decisions is essential to managing debt and maintaining financial stability.
